Hello friends!
As our core support group, you are the first with whom Matt & I are pleased to share the very first online course from the Stone Cottage Home!
This course on the basics of pattern mixing has been created in response to the questions I’ve received through the years about the mixing of patterns. The mixing of pattern, color, and texture has long been the custom for British homeowners whether they live in a manor or a cottage. It is this rich medley of patterns that gives the distinctive live-in, layer look of the English country house style. I simply adore this look and have enjoyed adding it to our home, so I thought I’d share what I’ve learned with you!

This course includes over half an hour of practical instruction on the basics of pattern mixing. You will learn how to start with a “hero” or lead print when creating a room scheme with multiple patterns. Together, we create two different room schemes built from the same hero print. This will help give you a feel for how flexible your hero print can be when you want to achieve the look with the pieces you have on hand.

We will discuss the challenges of scale in pattern mixing and how to create a cohesive look that is easy on the eye.

I will share the fabrics, wallpaper, and art, I’m considering for our master bedroom makeover. This has been such a fun project! I’ve chosen a color palette that works with the rest of our house, yet has a distinct, calm feeling that is particularly restful.

We will also discuss pattern placement. I remember wondering: “Is there a rule for this? Are you always supposed to place the large-scale prints on the large pieces like the drapes, or sofa?”
The course also includes a Frequently Asked Questions section and worksheets to help you evaluate and jumpstart projects of your own. We are pleased to have a resource like this to offer you and hope to see you there!

Until next time,
Happy pattern mixing!
Rachel
