IKEA’s BÄCKNATE Table Lamp Is Straight Out of an Art Gallery

Though I have overhead lighting in every room of my home, I rarely turn on the “big light.” Instead, I rely on table lamps for both task lighting and to create a cozy feel in every room. And when it comes to choosing table lamps to add to my ever-growing collection, I have one strict rule: They have to be practical and unique.

This can quickly become pricey, as stylish lamps don’t come cheap, but my latest find delivers on both form and function in abundance for just $25 — IKEA’s just-dropped BÄCKNATE table lamp.

Inspired by the silhouette of an orchid flower, this sculptural lamp is as much a decorative moment as it is a light. When turned off, its elegant form makes it look like a piece of art. And when switched on, the texture of the material becomes visible, giving it yet another dimension. For me, it’s one of those pieces that falls in the I-can’t-believe-it’s-from-IKEA category.

The light looks like it’s made of paper, but it’s actually made of a soft synthetic material that’s both durable and recyclable — another big plus. The paperlike texture brings with it a little unexpected surprise — putting the components together is like creating origami. According to its designer, Raffaella Mangiarotti, this was intentional, so that, “even assembling them can feel relaxing.”

At 20 inches tall, this lamp is definitely a sizable statement piece that will add drama to any tabletop. But at this height, it would be just as visually stunning as a floor lamp, especially if placed next to a low sofa or on either side of a low bed. Alternatively, let it shine as part of a shelf display. Or do all three, because at just $25 a piece, you don’t have to stop at one lamp.
