Seven massive sports stadiums set to built across the US

Following the release of a video showing a proposed HKS-designed stadium for the Cleveland Browns, we’ve rounded up seven sports stadiums in progress across the US, including a domed professional baseball stadium by BIG in Las Vegas.

Stadium design requires large amounts of funding and preparation, with many new builds dedicated to bringing novel technologies and viewing experiences to large-scale crowds.

While many of the below stadiums are being built to expand or renew the facilities in cities where the teams already play, some, like the new Athletics stadium in Las Vegas are being built to accommodate teams as they move cities.

Las Vegas is home to multiple transplant stadiums, including the recently built Allegiant Stadium there, home to the NFL team the Raiders.

The stadiums featured below will host sports teams from the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the New York City Football Club in New York City.

Many of them are enclosed but feature transparent ceilings to let in light, a relatively novel method for stadium building in the United States.

Read on for seven stadiums set to be built around the United States.

Architecture studio HKS and club owner Halsam Sports Group (HSG) recently released renders of a new stadium for the NFL team the Cleveland Browns, which would be relocated from its current site on the city’s lakefront to the Brook Park suburb.

The scheme shows a collection of angular buildings centred around a 67,500-seat stadium and has been met with some pushback from city officials and locals, who are protesting the use of taxpayer money for the move.

Danish architecture studio BIG and engineering firm HNTB collaborated on a new Las Vegas stadium for the Major League Baseball team the Athletics (The As), following the team’s move from Oakland, California after the 2024 season, following the Raiders, which also moved from Oakland.

Located on the Las Vegas strip, the stadium is set to accommodate 33,000 people under five overlapping volumes, one of which will be fronted with the “largest cable-net glass wall in the world” if completed, according to BIG.

International architecture studio HOK released designs for an open-air stadium for the New York City Football Club in Queens adjacent to the New York Mets’ Citi Field.

The 25,000-seat will be the major league soccer’s first stadium to run completely on electricity, according to the studio, and was designed to prioritise “approachability and engagement”.

Populous designed the new stadium for the NFL team the Bills to pay homage to the history, heritage and architecture of its home city of Buffalo in Upstate New York.

To be located next to the team’s current Highmark Stadium, the glass and stone-clad arena’s design was informed by local historic architecture such as The Rockpile, The Aud, and Kleinhans Music Hall, according to Populous.

“The venue will celebrate Jacksonville’s natural landscape and climate, offering a park-like ambiance enriched by the latest amenities, engaging social spaces and state-of-the-art technology,” said HOK design principal Peter Broeder.
