Gustaf Westman designs three-person bed for throuples and threesomes

Swedish designer Gustaf Westman and sex-positive dating app Feeld have created a multipurpose bed for at least three people as “an invitation to explore what’s new and possible”.

Based in Stockholm, Westman is known for his chunky and colourful homeware and furniture, including wiggly mirrors and blobby sofas.

The installation marks the designer’s first bed, created to invert the traditional four-poster structure into a curvaceous, retro-looking bed large enough to accommodate at least three people at once.

Composed of a looped metal frame, the Loopy Bed is fitted with a bright blue half-moon-shaped mattress crowned with a pale blue topper.

On one end of the bed, a TV and large speakers were built into a blocky red mount, while five circular lamps and two mirrors are set within similar yellow, green and purple fixtures suspended above the mattress.

“I’ve created a multifunctional environment that encourages spending more time in bed, with more people,” Westman told Dezeen. “It transforms the bed from a private space into a social, interactive one.”

The bed is a collaboration with Feeld – a dating app launched in 2014 to celebrate diverse sexualities and relationships ranging from polyamory to kink to aromanticism.

Westman and Feeld wanted to reimagine the possibilities of a traditional bed, not least the notion that it only sleeps one or two people.

“The bed for me is a place where I do everything from eating to hanging out with friends,” explained Westman.

“I wanted to create an object that encourages people to do activities and to spend time in bed with all its different functions! It’s an invitation to explore what’s new and possible.”

“Design is such a powerful form of self-expression, and it goes far beyond fashion,” added the designer. “The way we shape our homes should reflect who we are and what we believe in.”

The bed was designed to be paired with various Westman-designed add-ons, including a bedside table playfully named One Night Stand, a chunky wine glass holder and butt plug-shaped “juice squeezer”.

Among Westman’s previous projects is a collection of terrazzo-like tables made from recycled tights and a recent pop-up furniture event in New York City that was modelled on the experience of browsing an art museum.
