New York design studio BHDM has renovated a hotel in Sunnyvale, California, leaning into the retro vibe of the 1960s property and introducing a “poolside chic” palette.

The Wild Palms Hotel in the Bay Area – part of the Hyatt portfolio – was updated to better use its lobby and communal areas and provide guests with a more enjoyable indoor-outdoor experience.

BHDM took influences from the region’s desirable climate and the property’s midcentury origins to create a playful interior concept.

What started out as a simple refresh quickly turned into a more comprehensive shake-up of the layout, involving several architectural changes to open up the spaces.

“A top priority was creating a straight sightline to the pool from the lobby for a seamless flow from reception into the outdoor area,” said the design team.

To achieve this, the existing breakfast room was removed, and the check-in area was opened up into the main lobby.

Now, when guests arrive into the enlarged double-height lobby, they are greeted by a custom ceiling mobile of brightly coloured, intertwining circles.

Below, furniture in a citrus palette – including powder-coated tubular metal chairs that evoke a retro poolside setting — sit upon a circular blue rug.

The bold colours stand in stark contrast to the all-white walls, ceiling and staircase, and the off-white floor tiles.

To the right, the white reception desk sits in front of a mid-century-influenced relief mural flanked by sky-blue storage cabinets.

Circular cutouts in the counter front are filled with a sunset gradient, while a pair of large white lamps with ball-shaped adornments are set on top.

The same colour palette continues into the new breakfast room, which is also intended to be used as a workspace later in the day.

Striped walls and chairs, comfy banquettes, rattan lamps and patterned pillows are all used to create a fun atmosphere in the space.

“Tropical motifs such as beachballs and cabana stripes are found throughout, further emphasizing the sunny nature of the destination,” said the team.

Various seating types are offered to accommodate different uses throughout the day, and banquettes are equipped with electrical sockets to support remote workers.

Many of the guest rooms are upstairs and are accessed via corridors newly decorated in orange and yellow paint, with Bolon flooring to match.

Led by creative director Dan Mazzarini, BHDM has completed multiple hospitality projects across the US. These range from a boutique hotel in Miami’s South Beach, a rooftop bar at a property in Midtown Manhattan, and “the most Instagrammable hotel in Hawaii”.
