Dezeen Showroom: designers Christian Loddo and Hugo Berger have worked with Midgard Licht CEO and owner David Einsiedler to design Ray, the brand’s new adjustable lamp with an innovative mechanism.

Unveiled this week at Euroluce in Milan, the Ray table and floor lamps have a slimline, minimalist appearance with no visible wires – a feat achieved through its creative design and use of materials.

Midgard Licht’s Ray lamp has a minimalist form

The lamp is made of just three components – a metal base, an exchangeable head and a flexible steel arm – adjusted by sliding a steel band along it to change the height and inclination.

The steel elements conduct power between the base and the head, eliminating the need for additional wires, and the simplicity of the design means it is also repairable, with each of the three main components able to be replaced independently.

The Ray lamps are completed with a tunable white LED that can be switched on and off or dimmed via a touch-sensitive panel on the lamp head.

“Ray is based on a simple idea: mechanical complexity is replaced by material efficiency,” said Midgard Licht. “The result is a radical minimalist design.”
