Dezeen Showroom: Australian studio Heliograf has launched a new, wired iteration of its Light Soy lamp, designed with a focus on versatility.

The Light Soy Flex can be plugged into mains power via a two-metre universal cable, allowing it to function as a pendant, wall or table lamp.

The new Light Soy Flex is a plug-in version with added features

It also has added features including compatibility with Matter and Apple HomeKit smart-home devices, which allow the light’s colour temperature to be altered, and is fitted with dimmable LEDs and touch controls.

Like previous versions of the product, 75 per cent of the Flex’s shade is made from certified ocean-bound plastic collected in regions where most ocean-plastic pollution occurs.

The Light Soy lamp is styled on the small fish-shaped bottles sold with sushi

Heliograf co-founders Angus Ware and Jeffrey Simpson conceived the idea for the Light Soy to highlight the issue of single-use plastic and its harmful impact on marine life – including, ironically, the miniature fish-shaped soy sauce bottles sold with takeaway sushi.

“Sustainability should be seamless, functional, and we think it should also be a bit fun,” said Ware. “Design can, and must, inspire change, not just through things like materials and recycling, but through the small choices we make every day.”

Since the original lamp launched in 2020 it has funded the removal of more than 30 tonnes of plastic from coastlines and waterways – equivalent to over 30 million soy-sauce fish bottles.
