Dezeen Showroom: Catalan designer Eugeni Quitllet has added an upholstered armchair to his Africa collection for outdoor furniture brand Vondom, evolving the classic monobloc design into soft seating.

The Africa upholstered armchair keeps the simple, injection-moulded plastic form of the original design, but dials up the comfort level already provided by the generous, body-hugging seat through a thickly padded cushion.

The chair is still suitable for both indoors and outdoors, as it can be customised with weather-resistant fabrics, while the addition of an extra textural component invites play with the combination of textiles and finishes.

Vondom makes the chair available in both natural and bold shades, with either a standard or lacquered finish.

According to Quitllet, the longevity of the Africa collection, which first launched many years ago and has become a Vondom bestseller, adds to its appeal.

“The most beautiful thing for me? To create a product that stands the test of time,” he said. “That remains just as beautiful after a storm, after a bath in saltwater, after years in the sun… what could be more ecological than a product built to last?”
