With just three weeks left till entries close for Dezeen Awards 2025, we spoke to past winners about how their success brought new visibility and helped promote sustainability-focused projects.

“Inspiring, affirming and uplifting” were the words US practice Mass Design Group used to describe winning sustainability project of the year for its Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA), an accommodation block made from rammed earth.

Meanwhile, interior project of the year-winner Mesura, which won for its Aesop store made of salvaged building fragments, felt “empowered” by the accolade.

“Winning a Dezeen Award gives credibility, but more than that – it gives us a platform to persuade,” the studio said.

Time is running out to submit your projects for Dezeen Awards! Enter by 29 May for a chance to win one of the most coveted awards in architecture, interiors and design. For more inspiration, read on to hear more about what Mesura and Mass Design Group had to say:

Mass Design Group, whose “mission-driven” approach led the firm to two victories at Dezeen Awards 2024, was crowned sustainable project of the year and also named sustainable building of the year for its low-carbon university campus.

Speaking to Dezeen, Mass Design Group said it hopes the accolade and exposure will help promote sustainable architecture to new audiences.

“Recognition through programmes such as Dezeen helped to provide new visibility and celebration of our work,” Mass Design Group explained. “It enabled projects like RICA, and the stories of such projects, to reach new audiences and institutions.”

“The recognition is a reaffirmation of MASS’s mission and values to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity,” the studio added.

Spanish studio Mesura won the prestigious interiors project of the year award for its Barcelona Aesop store, which the judges praised for its circular approach.

The studio, which also took home the retail interior (small) project of the year, said that the “recognition helped align clients with our vision.”

“It allows us to show that it is possible, and even necessary, to prioritise sustainability and local identity in architecture,” explained Mesura.

The practice also expressed how winning boosted morale and served as motivation for future projects.

“Perhaps the most meaningful highlight is the validation in our way of practising – slow, thoughtful, grounded– is not only possible but increasingly relevant,” explained Mesura.

“It has strengthened our resolve,” it added. “We now feel an even greater responsibility to advocate for approaches that honour place, material, and memory.”

“Recognition at this level pushes us to remain courageous in our convictions and more articulate in how we communicate them to the world,” the studio continued.
