Swiss designer Nadja Stäubli has curated a multi-sensory installation featuring interactive sculptures during NYCxDesign.

Titled Chroma, the immersive installation is presented by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York and was designed to highlight the craftsmanship and playfulness of Swiss design.

The Chroma installation was created for NYCxDesign

Featured in the installation are multiple pieces by Atelier Oï, including a moving floor lamp which “breathes” in and out, an acoustic pendant lamp and a suspended paper installation reminiscent of Japanese origami.

Also featured are three interactive sculptures by Stäubli and Brooklyn-based studio Twoseven.

“I envisioned these sculptures as playful, imaginative objects that reflect the fun and fantasy Swiss design can offer,” said Stäubli, who runs Zurich-based design studio Sula.

As visitors walk through the installation, the colours and textures move from cooler to warmer tones, designed by Stäubli to reflect recurring patterns found in nature.

“The hot and cold theme reflects natural and emotional cycles: a day, a year, the seasons, our relationships, our health, even geography,” she explained.

“It felt like a rich and open-ended starting point for a visual interpretation.”

Included in the design of the sculptures are fabrics by Swiss textile company Jakob Schlaepfer.

The brand also created hanging fabrics made from tulle that surround the installation and feature a print designed by Stäubli.

Also featured are carpets by Sula and a bench and shelf by furniture brand Röthlisberger.

Visitors are invited to engage with the installation by stepping into and sitting on the sculptures and touching the materials throughout.

Swiss brand USM Modular Furniture created a space outside of the main installation for visitors to lounge in, including a bar and side tables.

Adding to the multi-sensory experience, visitors can smell a bespoke scent throughout the space created by Swiss company DSM-firmenich, alongside a custom sound installation by artist Sebastiao Loopes.

The Consulate General of Switzerland held a talk in the space co-hosted by Swissnex titled ‘Design by Collaboration: Crafting Across Disciplines’ as well as a site-specific dance performance by New York City-based dancer Caroline Dartey.

The photography is by Logan Jackson.

Chroma is on show until 21 May at the WSA 180 building in Manhattan. See Dezeen Events Guide for an up-to-date list of architecture and design events taking place around the world.
