Mexican creative studio Mestiz has created a suite for guests to stay in and experience the brand’s colourful world in the heart of San Miguel de Allende.

Mestiz founder Daniel Valero devised the Mesonia one-bedroom suite as a unique lodging experience in which all of the furniture and artwork is custom-made in his signature style.

“It’s our first permanent installation, and we wanted to explore what it means to create a complete living space – one that’s entirely directed, designed, and made by us at Mestiz,” Valero told Dezeen.

Located in the characterful San Antonio neighbourhood, close to the historic centre of San Miguel de Allende, the suite was designed in collaboration with locally based Maye Estudio – also known for its boldly colourful aesthetic.

The suite includes a king-sized bed, a fullyl equipped kitchen, a lounge area with built-in seating and a private outdoor terrace.

Bright blue flooring and walls run throughout, contrasting the building’s original wooden ceiling beams that were left exposed, and vivid green curtains cover the large windows.

Pink-stained wood was used for doors and a custom headboard, as well as furniture pieces

A full-height headboard was built from pink-stained wood and features scalloped details, matching the bed frame.

The same wood is also trimmed with chequered details for the doors, while chocolate brown tiles cover the bathroom, a fireplace surround, a freestanding basin and an exterior wall.

Valero created all of the furniture using artisanal techniques developed in collaboration with craftspeople from across Bajio and northern Mexico.

These include his chairs with woven sisal seats and backs, and fringe-like ruffles that sprout from either side.

Giant pink lampshades woven into sculptural shapes hang over the seating areas inside and the large dining table on the terrace, which is set with ceramic tableware featuring spiky details.

The self-catering accommodation encourages guests to explore the variety of family-run bakeries, open-air markets and restaurants within walking distance around the neighbourhood.

Valero crafts and presents many of his works nearby, in an old stone building converted into a workshop and showroom.

“Through Mesonia, Valero extends his practice into the realm of hospitality, offering a space where guests can not only observe but live his vision,” said a statement from the designer’s team.

San Miguel de Allende’s historic colonial architecture and buzzing arts scene have resulted in a recent tourism boom for the small city.

Other design-forward places to stay include the boutique Casa Hoyos hotel in a former Spanish colonial manor, the pink-hued Quinta Amores hotel and the nature-oriented Our Habitas. which was longlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2023.
