British designer Lee Broom is set to launch a portable table lamp informed by 1970s glass blocks as part of an exhibition of his lighting designs from the past decade at the 3 Days of Design festival in Copenhagen.
The Chant table lamp is on show alongside more than 70 other pieces developed by Broom and his London-based studio, which will be shown in a variety of new finishes and iterations.
Titled From Here Now, the exhibition is taking place at Asia House in Copenhagen and will see Broom’s lighting designs installed throughout the historic former headquarters of the East Asiatic Company.
The event will provide visitors with a first look at the Chant table lamp, which is based on a series of chandeliers launched during Milan design week in 2022.
The design is informed by the glass blocks commonly found in 1970s architecture. It features a square profile with circular indents on all sides that refract light emitted by a central bulb.
Chant is Broom’s first-ever portable lamp and is produced in frosted or clear glass versions, with bases finished in brushed gold, brushed silver and brushed bronze.
The lamp is weather resistant and is therefore suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Dimmable functionality allows the light output to be adjusted, while a battery holding 40 hours of charge enhances its portable utility.
The Copenhagen exhibition represents the first time that Broom has participated in 3 Days of Design. He claimed the “historic and inspiring setting” of Asia House will provide an opportunity to showcase his work in a new way.
“This show is an exciting moment for the brand,” Broom pointed out. “We’ve been on an incredible journey over the years, and this exhibition reflects both where we’ve come from and where we’re going.”
The exhibition references the building’s past by immersing visitors in an environment that harks back to an age of exploration, with objects from across the globe illuminated by Broom’s signature lighting pieces.
Broom is known for presenting his work in carefully curated exhibits that showcase his imaginative design approach.
Previous shows have seen him fill a building in Milan with lights to evoke the ethereal quality of religious buildings, and transform his own New York penthouse into a theatrical backdrop for a new lighting collection.
“My background was in theatre and then fashion,” the designer told Dezeen in a 2024 interview, “so there is often a sense of drama in my work, particularly in my exhibitions, where I like to create more of an experiential moment.”
Since founding his studio in 2007, Broom has released over 150 pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories that combine elements of craft and heritage with modernist aesthetics and a sculptural quality.
Examples of his designs include a chair that pays homage to musical instruments and a kaleidoscopic lighting installation made by combining some of his lights with a series of mirrors.
“I like to reinterpret classic designs in new and innovative ways with an unexpected edge,” Broom added. “I design for longevity with the hope that people will love and live with our products for a lifetime and beyond.”
