    Homemade Autumn Cottage DIY Projects

    Welcome to autumn, friends!

The leaves are starting to trickle down and cooler weather is becoming more consistent. Matt and I have been walking and jogging in the mornings before work. The pale pink sky and turning leaves are thrilling! This change in the seasons always stirs me to purge, clean, decorate, and do DIY projects. Today I’m sharing a simple pinecone garland that I’ve been wanting to make since last autumn.

For this simple project, you’ll need:

    • 2 bags of small pine cones
    • Velvet ribbon ~ in your favorite fall color

Begin by tying a loop at the end of your twine to hang your garland from once you’ve finished. Then begin gluing on your pinecones. I found that pointing them outward versus sideways along the twine gave a fuller look.

I found that working in sets of three gave the best look and each set would tuck nicely into the previous set. Also, for a tidy look I picked off the glue strings as I went. They are easier to remove when warm. To finish out the swag I filled in a gap here and there where the glue was showing.

Tip: As you will see in the video, to get the swag effect I left about a two-and-a-half-inch gap of twine without pinecones to have space to hang the twine. This also allowed room for the pinecones from the two sides of the swag to lay nicely.

The natural simplicity of this DIY project is classic and timeless! The velvet ribbons on each end are just the right touch of elegance and the vintage copper mold adds that personal homey touch. I love how this turned out and can also see myself using this at Christmas time!

For autumn I swap out the blue transferware plates and platters for the brown transferware. I found a stack of the coaching scene plates at the thrift store a couple of years ago. These were added to the handful of Spode Woodland dinner plates we’d already collected.

Here is our kitchen for Autumn. On the island, the dough bowl holds velvet pumpkins from a previous DIY project years ago, and a thrifted copper coffee pot with an anutumn spray. I love the subtle touches of natural decor. It’s just enough to usher in the season and create a festive feeling.

In the living room, the spring-summer painting is swapped for this autumn-themed painting. A simple, but realistic looking faux garland adds some movement while the antique mantel clock and thrifted candlesticks center the vignette and add height. The velvet pumpkins round out the look with a bit of shine and texture.

Lastly, a soft and cozy plaid throw and a pair of mossy green pillows dress the sofa. I’m so looking forward to the first day we light the fire!

Welcome to Autumn, friends. I hope you enjoyed this post and will take the time to go on fall walks with your family, enjoy a picnic, and make smores! Until next time,

    Take Care,

    Rachel
