A collection of contemporary designs, including rugs by Doshi Levien and Eny Lee Parker for CC-Tapis and lighting by Flos, have been installed in the house and studio of iconic Mexican architect Max Cetto during Mexico City art week.

Local design firm Studio 84 curated the overall exhibition, called Metamorphosis, working with Milan-based rug company CC-Tapis, which showcased collaborations with New York designer Eny Lee Parker and London-based studio Doshi Levien.

Local gallery Unno also brought some of its collections to be shown on the grounds and interior of Casa-Estudio Max Cetto, a modernist house constructed in 1949 by German-Mexican architect Cetto for himself and his family.

The work included a series of decorative rugs created by Parker that were displayed on the floors inside the two-storey house and on the wall that hems in the front yard. This was made out of the lava stone typical of the area, Pedregal, which was also used in the construction of the house.

Parker used monochrome tones for most of the rugs, rendered in dark and light browns. Called Clay Scan, they were informed by the texture of clay as it’s being folded – a reference to Parker’s own work in clay.

“This process allowed me to bridge the physicality of sculpting with the artistry of textile design,” said Parker. “Each rug reflects the transformative nature of clay – its malleability, texture, and the connection to human touch.”

Parker’s work was also installed in the upstairs den, a striking room with an intricate mosaic rendered on the ceiling.

Doshi Levien created a series of colourful, gridded rugs displayed prominently in the living room. Called the Raag collection, the rug’s geometric patterns were created to reference the structure of Indian classical music.

Unno Gallery was chosen to display its collection of furniture from a variety of designers, including a collection of new pieces created by the recently formed joint studio of Peruvian designer Caterina Moretti of Peca Studio and Canadian designer Jeff Martin.

The pair created a series of metallic stools and cabinets with undulating forms.

Also included was a coffee table made of wood with a built-in backgammon board by Colombian-based Andrea Vargas Dieppa, while local design studio Habitación 116 created a series of monolithic volcanic stone pieces.

Ōmbia Studio, also from Colombia, created a white coffee table with irregularly shaped legs, while Flos showed a series of archival lights from its archives.

Perhaps the most stand-out piece was a massive stone sculpture placed in the front yard by Mexican designer and artist César Núñez.

Núñez’s piece consisted of straight beams of stone with cross beams at the top that formed a series of crosses, with a metallic ball hanging from a cord.

“Exploring the theme of Metamorphosis, the exhibition invites viewers on a profound journey of transformation – both physical and symbolic,” said Unno Gallery.

“It examines the evolution of forms, ideas, and materials, revealing new perspectives that shape our understanding of existence.”

The photography is by Alejandro Ramirez Orozco.

The exhibition was on show from 4 to 9 February at Casa-Estudio Max Cetto. For more events, exhibitions and talks in architecture and design, visit Dezeen Events Guide.
