Promotion: architecture competition organiser Buildner has opened its competition for designers to create a futuristic home suitable for the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The House of the Future competition seeks innovative proposals for a home to suit modern Emirati needs.

Proposals should align with the traditional values of the UAE while offering a fresh take on the home and addressing the functional needs of modern-day people.

Winners will be announced on 15 July 2025

Buildner’s competition is open to both students and professionals. Winners will share a prize fund of $250,000 and their proposal will be considered for construction by the UAE government.

The first prize is $140,000, the second prize is $45,000, the third prize is $20,000, and the innovation award is $45,000.

Proposals must consider the UAE’s diverse landscape, ranging from oases, and mountains to coastlines and deserts.

They must also consider its changing environment, including prolonged heat waves and flooding risks. Proposals must use sustainable materials and have limited environmental impact.

The competition launched from Buildner’s concern about the crises of affordable housing and the need to develop ideas for efficient living spaces that make use of developing technologies.

“As architects and designers, we need to continue thinking outside the box every day, creating proposals that excite one other and our communities,” said Buildner.

“Buildner seeks to push boundaries, ask loaded questions and continually move the industry forward through the competitions it organizes.”

The competition is open to both students and professionals. Block Yard won the award’s second prize last year

Entries will be judged by an international jury including representatives from Foster + Partners, Alison Brooks and Zaha Hadid Architects, among others.

Buildner has organized over 140 successful competitions over ten years and has over 400 members. The company also hosts an annual Microhome competition, which challenges architects to create an off-grid modular home under 25 square meters.

Past proposals include a floating home in Bangladesh and spaces to support agricultural workers in Turkey.

Proposals should align with the traditional values of the UAE

“Buildner celebrates architecture competitions as an effective tool for achieving progress by fostering groundbreaking ideas that push the industry forward,” said the organisation. “Through academic and project competitions, we are building an inclusive and diverse community of architects and designers, by promoting critical topics such as affordable, sustainable and small-scale housing to address global challenges.”

“Our goal is to inspire the next generation of designers to propose innovative solutions and challenge the status quo.”
