Dezeen Showroom: kaleidoscopic colour combinations drawn from the work of well-known painters decorate these drinking glasses by US design brand Upstate.

Upstate’s glasses are designed by the studio’s founder Kalen Kaminski, before being hand-blown by skilled artisans in New York City.

Various colours are mixed in with the clear base during the glassmaking process, giving each piece a distinctive and colourful appearance.

Upstate’s hand-dyed glasses include Fumé, a design traced with ribbons of black

The five available colourways include Fumé, a mostly transparent glass traced with ribbons of black and tinted lightly with amber, and Frankie, which has soft ripples of butterscotch and pale pink.

Kokomo features pastel colours that allude to “walking on sand, wind in hair, Beach Boys on the radio and sun-kissed cheeks”, while green Moss and pink-and-green watermelon have more obvious origins.

Kaminski said she looked to the paintings of artists Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler and Ellsworth Kelley to inform the colour of the glasses.

Each piece is unique with the slight inconsistencies that come from hand-blowing glass.

“We believe in the joy of experimentation and the thrill of the unexpected,” said Upstate. “Upstate is playful and eludes to the idea of escape, slowing down and being in the moment.”
