Dezeen Showroom: architect and designer Patricia Urquiola was informed by traditional Arab hospitality to create this low, rounded and modern sofa system for Spanish brand Kettal.

The Insula sofa borrows from the traditional low and generous seating that surrounds a traditional Arab majli, or sitting room – a focal point in the home for welcoming guests and entertaining friends.

Insula is a low, modular sofa based on Arab seating traditions

The design comprises an aluminium base topped with a thick, plush seat – the base can be customised with a choice of 34 paints and the seat can be upholstered with one of 60 fabric options.

The layout of the sofa can be configured through one-seat, two-seat and daybed modules, and further individualised through the placement of the bolster-like rolled backrests in either straight or corner variations.

It can be used indoors and out

According to Kettal, the Insula sofa can be adapted to a wide variety of settings, both indoors and out, ranging from office reception or lounge areas to the residential living room or terrace.

“In function, like the original majlis, the Insula sofa’s main purpose is for socialising,” said Kettal. “It combines carefully balanced proportions as an architectural element that can be subtly integrated.”
