Kriskadecor's chain installation brings Japanese landscape to Andorra at restaurant Ginza 41

Promotion: Spanish design brand Kriskadecor has installed a wall of tensioned aluminium chains across the facade of a sushi restaurant in Andorra la Vella, creating the impression of a traditional Japanese landscape painting.

Set in the parish of Les Escaldes, Ginza 41 is the second outpost of a local Japanese restaurant designed by Spanish architect Àfrica Sabé to create something that “no one had ever seen before in Andorra”.

The eatery features a wooden facade, half covered in a chain-link curtain that brings a bucolic watercolour of mountains and cherry blossoms to the streets of the country’s capital.

“The idea to integrate aluminium chains into the facade arose from the imagery of traditional chain curtains – those that evoke the feel of an old family home,” Sabé said.

“These chains awaken memories of holidays, delicious food, and tranquillity. We wanted to recreate those sensations while also connecting with the essence of Japan, offering a preview of the experience that awaits inside the restaurant.”

Kriskadecor installed a 13.7 metres wide chain curtain across its facade

Measuring 13.7 metres wide and 3.4 metres high, the curtain of tensioned aluminium chains was created using the KDO Fixed System from the Kriskadecor Outdoor range.

The Japanese landscape was reproduced onto these metal chain links using 15 separate RAL colours, creating a lifelike representation that draws the attention of passers-by while providing signage, wayfinding and branding for the restaurant.

“Everyone who passes by stops for a moment to admire it,” Sabé said. “Time itself seems to pause as they wonder what experience awaits them inside.”

The metal curtain also helps create a sense of privacy for the hotel rooms above the restaurant, whose windows are hidden behind the chains without obstructing visibility.

On hot days, the metal also helps to reduce heat transfer from direct sunlight while allowing for natural ventilation.
