Dezeen Showroom: curved paper lampshades can be angled to change the direction of light in this collection of lamps by designer Sebastian Herkner for German brand Midgard.

Named after Finnish-American textile artist and sculptor Loja Saarinen, the Loja collection comprises a floor lamp, table lamp and pendant lamp, all characterised by a sweeping paper shade that can be tilted at will.

Loja lamps feature a paper shade that can be moved by hand to cast light in different directions

In the floor and table lamps, the shades are placed on a hand-blown frosted glass base glass that, when illuminated, creates a diffused light that appears to radiate upwards.

“The soft, dynamic shape of the lampshade encourages interaction and invites users to direct the light as they wish,” said designer Sebastian Herkner. “Like a hat that you wear casually on your head, the shade can be swivelled into the desired position with a flick of the wrist.”

The range was produced in line Midgard‘s sustainability principles: paper sourced from the fashion industry, glass and nickel-plated steel are combined without the use of glue, allowing each component to be recycled at the end of its lifespan.

Each individual part can also be repaired by the user, and the LED and transformer can be replaced without using any tools.
