In this week’s comments update, readers are discussing a glazed pavilion with a stepped roof made of imitation stone by DoDesign studio in Chongqing, China.
The Drifting Stones pavilion features a panoramic viewing area, with stone-like roof elements made from steel frames covered in poured cement mixed with local stone powder.
“Falling Polyester”
Dezeen commenters were unsure about the structure. JZ felt it was “trying too hard” and proceeded to call the pavilion “a theme park in the woods”.
Northern Norm branded it “Falling Polyester”, as a play on Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Fallingwater house.
For Marius, the structure represented how “at one point we decided that walking in the woods in search of wonder is not enough – we need a designed viewing point, air conditioned, with an info centre, shop with t-shirts and water bottles, a parking lot, washroom with skylight and a bistro.”
However, not all commenters were quite so disparaging, with Ann Jones proposing “love the design idea, but fake rock is still fake rock”.
Keith Powers weighed in to say: “I like it – it does remind you a bit of Falling Water – but in grey stone instead of stucco beige.”

“BIG might have eclipsed the Peregrine falcon for fastest dive speed”
Readers were left incensed after seeing BIG’s design for a residential structure with chamfered edges in Brooklyn, New York.
“That’s one of the clumsiest looking things I’ve ever laid eyes on – wow,” declared commenter Chris. “Hard to believe this is a starchitecture firm,” he added before remarking that “BIG might have eclipsed the Peregrine falcon for fastest dive speed.”
Several other commenters were left in disbelief, with D B Jones asking “how does this stuff receive planning permission, let alone leave the drawing board?”
IDRACULA put forward that “alpha developers lead… architects follow”.
This sentiment was echoed by Flvs, who wrote “yikes – BIG is out of ideas and developers love it”.

“Humanity is back!”
One project which readers were impressed by was a house in Vietnam designed by Naqi & Partners to resemble a sequence of terracotta pots.
Marius observed “another fine Vietnamese project published” before adding that an “architectural trip may be in order”.
“Humanity is back!” exclaimed Arhmatic, while Ken Robertson called the project “topnotch”.
Chuck, meanwhile, wrote “let a thousand flowers bloom”.
