Dezeen School Shows: an installation designed to visualise emotional states through light and colour is among the Zurich University of the Arts student projects.
Also featured is a project that explores the decline in global fertility and an installation that allows visitors to communicate with lab-grown clusters of living neuron cells.

“Today’s industrial and interaction designers are facing major technological, ecological, and societal challenges. Traditional system boundaries are becoming inadequate, shifting the focus from humans alone to the planet and all its interconnected parts.
“Our graduates have tackled a number of pressing issues with a holistic approach, leveraging their acquired knowledge, skills and creativity to develop promising solutions.”
Re:production – where the wish to have children becomes reality by Papoula Kolb and Raymond Frey
“How will we have children in the future if fertility continues to decline, social norms change and technology opens up new avenues?
“Re:production makes it possible for everyone to have a child, regardless of age, gender and partnership status. This speculative scenario puts the opportunities and risks of current research up for discussion.”

90° N – on track in the whiteout by Alain Scherer
“In whiteout conditions, at temperatures far below zero and without any visible points of orientation, the navigation system 90° N shows the extreme athlete Anja Blacha her way to the North Pole.
“The wearable device is specifically designed to cater for her needs and makes orientation possible even in extreme conditions.”

Bloc° – a modular cooling system for Urban Heat Zones by Andrin Stocker and Luc Schweizer
“The number of hot days is increasing every year. Particularly in cities, places such as bus stops become a challenge.
“The modular cooling system Bloc°, made of terracotta, uses evaporative cooling and solar energy. It creates a noticeable cooling effect and makes spending time at susceptible locations more comfortable.”
Students: Andrin Stocker and Luc Schweizer
Course: Bachelor Industrial Design

Memoscent – biographies of scents for people with dementia by Alissa Knopp
“Nothing evokes memories as powerfully as a familiar scent. The sense of smell is the most emotional of our senses. This potential often remains untapped in everyday life with dementia.
“Memoscent uses specific, biographically relevant scents to promote trust, a sense of security and interactions and make it easier to settle into a care facility.”

Paid Attention – a highly valuable resource by Gaëtan Merminod

Soma – engage with a living brain organoid and experience how biology can shape modern computation by Luca Busby and Basil Egger
“This globally unique installation allows you to directly communicate with lab-grown clusters of living neuron cells – so-called brain organoids.
“By interacting with an artificial skin, users create impulses that are sent to the organoid, whose reaction is reflected back as movement in the same membrane.
“By making this newly emerging field more transparent, we encourage reflection on a sustainable and organic future where biological material is being proposed as a solution for modern-day computing.”
Students: Luca Busby and Basil Egger
Course: Bachelor Interaction Design
Tutors: Roman Kirschner and Mona Neubauer

The Mirror of Emotions – a light installation for visualising emotions and enhancing self-awareness by Cyril Keller
“The Mirror of Emotions is an interactive light installation designed to visualise inner emotional states through light and colour.
“Using a symbolic user interface, users consciously select their current emotional state, which is then translated into a corresponding light composition. This creates a mood picture that enhances self-awareness and emotional awareness in everyday life.”

60° Celsius – blood as a material between aesthetics, perception and cultural taboo by Tanya Spale
“60° Celsius explores blood as an aesthetic and culturally charged material by means of design. What normally disappears down a drain is poured, dried and moulded here.
“The resulting objects show blood as a substance with a metallic lustre, and a lively structure and expression. This work invites us to take a fresh look at the seemingly repulsive – between disgust, beauty and the question of what we perceive as valuable.”
