Dezeen Showroom: American stone and tile company Walker Zanger was informed by the veiny appearance of travertine for its durable porcelain Navona tile collection.

Although Navona tiles are made from porcelain, their veiny finish mimics travertine – a form of terrestrial limestone used throughout the history of architecture, from Rome’s Colosseum to the White House in Washington DC.

Walker Zanger aimed to mirror the appearance of travertine but chose porcelain to make the most of the more cost-effective material’s high resistance to heat, stains and scratches.

Navona is available in four colours – bianco, avorio, grigio and rosso – each drawing inspiration from the historical applications of travertine worldwide.

Walker Zanger used two unique cutting techniques to replicate the appearance of natural travertine: cross-cut and vein-cut.

Both methods create distinctively textured and patterned stone, available in multiple thicknesses.

“Navona offers a fresh and practical alternative for designers who want the desirable look of travertine with the durability and flexibility of porcelain,” said Walker Zanger.
