The Foster + Partners-designed One Bloor West skyscraper has reached 300 metres tall in Toronto, making it Canada’s first supertall skyscraper and the “tallest residential building in the country to date”.

Designed by Foster + Partners with Core Architects and developed by Tridel, One Bloor West is located in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood and is set to reach 85 storeys and 308.6 metres (1,012 feet) upon completion.

“One Bloor West is officially Canada’s first supertall building,” said Tridel. “This will make it the tallest residential building in the country to date and the second-tallest man-made structure, next to the CN Tower.”

Following the tower’s design released in 2015, the project has been under construction along with a number of other skyscrapers and large projects in the city.

Not unlike Foster + Partner’s 270 Park Avenue skyscraper in Manhattan, One Bloor West will have an “articulated” structural frame on its facade, with bronze diagonal and horizontal elements wrapped around the exterior.

Renders show the skyscraper divided into distinct volumes, divided by sections of mechanical floors.

The tower is set to contain 476 residential units on its upper levels, and hotel and retail floors on the lower stories.

According to Tridel, progress on the project “continues to progress steadily” and “major structural milestones” are complete, with interior work next to come. It will be completed in mid 2028, with some occupancy as early as 2027.

It is now the second-tallest structure in the city after the CN Tower

“Foster + Partners is delighted that One Bloor West has now reached its highest floor and has already become a reference point for Toronto’s unique and distinctive skyline,” said Foster + Partners senior partner Giles Robinson.

“The building is a remarkable feat of design and engineering and is a testament to the ingenuity and creative collaboration of the design team and contractors.”

Major structural work is now complete, according to developer Tridel

One Bloor West, formerly The One, was set to be the city’s tallest skyscraper when it was first announced. It is set to be eclipsed by SkyTower at Pinnacle One Yonge, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, which is also under construction and is set to top out at 351.85 metres (1,154 feet).

Toronto has seen a recent boom in the construction of skyscrapers and larger residential blocks, with international architecture firms such as Frank Gehry, BIG and 3XN on design.

Recently, Dezeen rounded up seven major skyscraper projects in the city and shared photos of BIG’s pixelated King Toronto Residences under construction.
